空想 Kūsō - A daydream VR experience
a virtual reality daydream experience student project made in Unreal Engine 4.26.
The experience is from a point of view of a person using the Japanese subway as they fall asleep in it and find theirself within a dreamworld-version of the train.
Inside this "dream world" the viewer is now able to move through the wagons, each with a completely different design and theme.
It starts with a Neo Tokyo City theme, to a traditional tea house and ends within a bamboo garden.

My task was to design the interior of the traditional tea house wagon
Traditional Japanese Artstyle
The whole point of the experience wasn't only to show of some different faces of Japanese culture in an abstract and colorful way, but also to have fun exploring the surreal environment.
As for the making, we all worked for the first time in Unreal Engine and had a lot of learning to do at the beginning. We also split the work, so everyone had their own train wagon to work on.
Most of the assets and shaders etc. were self-made, but we also used some of the Megascan-library and other asset stores.

The traditional train uses an Papercut-technique, which you´ll find outside the wagon. Old Ukiyo-e paintings like The Great Wave off Kanagawa by Katsushika Hokusai were cut out and set into several layers, which create an unique mixed media type of style.
